MUTARE, Sep. 15, 2025 (NewsDay Live) - Leader of Johanne The Fifth of Africa, Archbishop Andby Makururu says God-anointed power does not come easy because of opposition from enemies and opposers.
Makururu made the remarks while he was addressing thousands of his congregants in Manica province, Mozambique, over the weekend, where his church was hosting its annual gathering.
The gathering was attended by several Mozambican Frelimo leaders and Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF party top officials.
Makururu said the ascent to power of Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and his Zimbabwean counterpart Emmerson Mnangagwa was not a stroll in the park.
“When power is coming, you face challenges, especially when you want to lead a country, church, and many leadership positions, because many people want leadership positions,” he said.
“When I started this church, I faced many challenges. Some people wanted me arrested, but I remained steadfast and prayed. Even today, I am still encountering several challenges.”

Added Makururu: “President Daniel Chapo did not come to power easily, there was violence against him, and also look at President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Zimbabwe. If he had not run away from the country, he could have been killed or jailed and failed to rule the country.”
Mozambique was rocked by post-election violence, which claimed several lives after Chapo was declared the winner in the last year’s election.
Mnangagwa escaped from the country in 2017 after he was fired from Zanu PF by then President, the late Robert Mugabe, before he bounced back to unseat Mugabe.
Meanwhile, Makururu has congratulated Mnangagwa on his birthday which is being celebrated at his Zvishavane home today.
