BY MOSES MATENGA POLICE have offered to pay US$3 500 in damages to a 70-year-old Chitungwiza woman who was shot and seriously injured by an officer manning a roadblock in 2019.

Evas Mashingaidze was shot on the arm by a police officer near a tollgate along ED Mnangagwa Road.

Through her lawyer Darlington Marange of the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum, Mashingaidze sued for medical expenses, shock and pain after the shooting.

But police insisted they were not negligent and that their actions were not unlawful.

The matter then went for a pre-trial conference and parties were directed to conduct a round table discussion to agree on settlement.

After protracted negotiations that started in April last year, police finally agreed to pay US$3 500 as compensation.

Marange said efforts would be made to ensure Mashingaidze got her compensation.

There have been several cases of victims being negligently injured by police officers across the country, with most cases dying before receiving their compensation.
