The project, spearheaded by Unicef, has been bankrolled by Australia to the tune of $30 million for the rehabilitation of critical water supply sewage infrastructure and strengthen related institutional systems such as finance and customer care.

“The Australian government, through its development agency Australian Aid, is contributing $30 million through Unicef to the programme,” Unicef said in a statement on Monday.

Most urban centres in Zimbabwe are struggling to provide clean water to their residents and in 2008, the country had to rely on Unicef and other donors to deal with a cholera outbreak that claimed 4 000 lives countrywide.
