BY TAFADZWA KACHIKO RUWA-BASED visual artist Gift Mudzongo has joined the fight against drug abuse through art with his latest abstract piece titled Drug Novel.

Mudzongo told NewsDay Life & Style that he was prompted to work on the artwork after realising that the future of most talented youths was being robbed by drugs.

“For the past two years I have been working on this piece of art with the aim to add my voice to the campaign against drug abuse.

“I intend to launch this artefact through tours around ghettos and schools where there are many youths who seem to be indulging in drugs,” he said.

“As someone, who scouts talent, I realised that most talented young people get trapped by drugs to an extent of killing their talents. Their self-esteem is lost to drugs.”

Mudzongo said he had created WhatsApp groups to connect youths and health experts in the concerned area.

“The Drug Novel piece gives its viewers something to think about or digest. I noticed that stress, peer pressure and lack of discipline and direction are major factors that are pushing young people into drugs,” he said.

“I created WhatsApp groups to accommodate youths and health experts in an effort to deal with the problem. I strongly believe that tailor-made motivation sessions will help the affected individuals.”

Mudzongo said with the necessary financial support, campaigns around schools and high-density suburbs would be very successful in the fight against drug abuse.
