Benjani’s Bosso big test

Of course, not everything that glitters is gold.

This idiom describes the situation facing many Zimbabwean clubs, including Highlanders, particularly when it comes to financial challenges and the prioritisation of players’ welfare.

From the outside, clubs may appear organised and stable, but a deeper look often reveals a difficult reality, especially for the players.

However, a recent video posted on the Highlanders Facebook page titled “Day 1 for Highlanders Pre-Season Camp in Gaborone, Botswana” offers a glimpse of what could be a positive atmosphere within the Bosso camp.

It’s the kind of sight that may encourage the Bosso family and even neutral followers of local football who admire the Bulawayo giants from afar.

In the video, Highlanders players, including Andrew Mbeba, who has been absent from training due to contract issues, appear jovial and cooperative as they follow instructions from head coach Benjani Mwaruwari and his assistant Mkhokheli Dube while the two were demonstrating training drills.

The players’ body language looks promising and encouraging, even though recent reports suggest they are yet to receive their January salaries.

If anything, Mwaruwari could be trying to create a friendly and united environment at Amahlolanyama, bringing positive energy and a sense of togetherness to a club that is desperately eager to end its long league title drought while celebrating 100 years of existence this season.

Managing the dressing room could prove crucial for the former Portsmouth and Manchester City striker, because even some of the top coaches in football have seen promising projects collapse after failing to properly handle players off the field.

On Sunday Mawaruwari will be in the dugout for the first time as Highlanders coach when the oldest football club in Zimbabwe hosts rivals Bulawayo Chiefs in the Castle Premier Soccer League season opener at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo.

It will probably be the biggest test for the former Warriors striker’s mettle as coach as he seeks to improve Bosso’s fortunes from last season where the team fought relegation.
