Drunk husband assaults wife in jealousy fit

A 35-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man has been fined US$200 for physically assaulting his wife after accusing her of infidelity while under the influence of alcohol.

Tongai Chipwanya appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Themba Chimiso and was convicted of contravening the Domestic Violence Act, which prohibits all forms of domestic violence, including physical abuse.

The law seeks to protect spouses, family members and other persons from violence, intimidation and harm within domestic relationships.

Chipwanya was fined US$200. Failure to pay the fine will result in him serving 30 days in prison.

The court also imposed a three-month prison sentence, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.

Prosecutor Samuel Mpofu told the court that on June 16, Chipwanya arrived home intoxicated and confronted his wife after seeing an unidentified man leaving their residence.

“He confronted his wife after seeing an unidentified man leaving their home and accused her of infidelity. He then strangled her before punching and kicking her,” Mpofu said.

The matter was reported to the police, leading to Chipwanya’s arrest.
