THE government has started relocating Matabeleland South provincial health offices from Bulawayo to Gwanda, with key health officials including the provincial medical director (PMD) and other senior officers having moved to the provincial capital in February this year.
Responding to a question in Parliament posed by Gwanda North legislator Desire Nkala, Health and Child Care minister Douglas Mombeshora, confirmed that the migration process has started, with several members of the provincial health executive operating full-time from Gwanda.
“We have started the migration of the office to Gwanda and I can confirm this because I went for a tour to Matabeleland South last week, with the provincial health promotion officer.
“Currently, the following provincial health executive members are based full-time in Gwanda, which includes provincial maternal and child health officer, provincial health information officer, provincial accountant, provincial health promotion officer, HIV focal person and the provincial medical director have just moved to Gwanda,” he said.
Mombeshora said the move would enable stakeholders to access the PMD office in Gwanda during weekdays as the government worked to fully establish the provincial health offices in the town.
“We expect that all stakeholders should be able to fully access the PMD's office in Gwanda from now onwards as the office will be open on all weekdays,” he said.
Mombeshora added that the shifting process was slowed down by shortage of office space and staff accommodation, indicating that authorities are temporarily utilising district offices to ease the situation.
“The challenge that the office had was space and staff accommodation in Gwanda, however it has been partially solved through the use of the district office space.

“The PMD's office has a staff complement of about eight (8) people and most of them require office space which has not been available,” Mombeshora said.
