UPGRADING of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport in Bulawayo – which had been stalled by several bottlenecks since 2004 – is now set to be completed next month, airport manager Passmore Dewa has revealed.

The project was initially scheduled to be completed in 2004, but was put on hold due to lack of funds, among other factors.
In May this year, the government announced the project would now be completed by the end of August.
“The electrification, sewer and plumbing system of the airport is in working order,” Dewa said.
“We are now doing the final touches and all the 30 contractors have been working hard to make sure that there is progress.

“What is left is to just undertake some retesting to make sure that specialist equipment is fully functional, hopefully by November 2, we will be done with everything.”
Dewa said the upgraded Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport would be officially opened on December 22 this year. He said the government was planning to construct an additional Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport control tower next year to improve operational safety measures at the airport.
