In the final reckoning, the mathematics of the title race will suggest that a seesaw 3-all draw at Chahwanda Stadium benefited neither Hardrock nor Caps United.
Yet to view Sunday’s breathless encounter through the cold lens of the league table is to miss the point entirely.
Caps United president Farai Jere was quick to elevate the six-goal thriller to a higher status, rating it unequivocally as the game of the season so far.
It was an afternoon of pure, end-to-end theatre that left a capacity crowd spellbound and showcased the very best of the local game.
"We watched the best match," a delighted Jere said after the final whistle. "It was a thriller, with action from one end to the other. We really enjoyed ourselves. It was a very exciting afternoon for football and we expect such quality of football week in week out whereby our fans who come to watch, get value for their money."
The narrative of the match shifted constantly under the Kwekwe chilly weather.

Hardrock struck the first blow through Washington Navaya who finished a brilliant through pass from Donald Mudadi, but Caps United rallied.
Defender Kudzai Chigwida fired into the roof an equaliser just before the interval, setting the stage for a frantic second period. The visitors briefly took the lead immediately after the restart when halftime substitute Obriel Chirinda scored with his very first involvement in the 46th minute.
Yet, the drama was only just beginning.
Hardrock responded through Wilfred Madzungu, introduced from the bench, who turned the match on its head with two quick-fire, thumping headers to restore the home side's advantage.
It seemed written that the hosts would secure all three points until a late twist of cruelty befell Gerald Takwara.
Making his debut for Hardrock, the Warriors midfielder's catastrophic first touch gifted an equaliser to the returning Chris Mugalu—back in the Caps United fold after missing the entire first half of the season—to ensure the spoils were shared.
The encounter also acted as a high-profile gallery for mid-season acquisitions. While Mugalu made his presence felt, veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi was thrust straight into the Caps United starting line-up just days after signing.
Hardrock countered by introducing star forward Prince Dube alongside the unfortunate Takwara in the second half.
For Jere, the spectacle on the pitch was matched only by the devotion in the stands.
"When I arrived here in Kwekwe, something touched me," he admitted, saluting the green-and-white wall of travelling support. "I saw buses coming from as far as Bulawayo. We didn't even put a cent for those fans to come here. They were making a lot of noise, waving their Caps United flags through the windows. They love their team so when they come they need to see a good product and I'm sure today they were actually treated to that. This was a top drawer, first class football match which exhibits the best Zimbabwean football. I'm very happy and I hope we are going to continue playing like that. I hope our football is going to remain at that level."
Following the match, Jere—in his civic capacity as the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chairperson on Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture—was given a guided tour of the impressive new arena by Hardrock counterpart Shepherd Chahwanda.
"I would want to appreciate Mr Chahwanda," Jere noted. "He took the opportunity that I'm around to take me through the entire facility... This is a magnificent facility. I've never seen anything like this and I'd like to thank him for coming up with this idea to put up such a facility which is not his alone as I was talking to him. This is a national asset. If you look at this asset, it's going to be used even by our national teams.
"The development which they are doing on the stadium's B and C arena which they were showing me is magnificent. I'm telling you it will be an all-encompassing facility where all sports can be played here including athletics. They're already putting up the tartan track for the athletes so they want the facility to be all encompassing. I'm very excited and they showed me this facility after watching arguably the best match of the season which we watched here. If anyone had watched this match even on television at international level, it was going to pass the mark."
The coaches, too, found themselves caught between the frustration of defensive frailty and the joy of unbridled entertainment.
“Not talking about the result, but I think the outcome of the overall game showed that we’ve got teams that are able to entertain the fans,” reflected Hardrock coach Kelvin Kaindu.
His counterpart, Takesure Chiragwi, echoed those sentiments, finding solace in the atmosphere. "I’m happy about how the fans came to the stadium. They got value for their money in terms of exciting football. The performance was good, so we take the point — it is very important to us,” Chiragwi said.
Yet, for all the romance of the six-goal thriller, the cold reality of the league table will sting both dressing rooms.
The stalemate did little to aid either side's title ambitions, serving instead as a massive boost to log leaders Scottland, who tightened their grip on the summit with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over FC Hunters on Saturday.
The draw leaves second-placed Hardrock on 39 points after 21 rounds, seven behind Scottland.
They do, however, retain a faint lifeline as the Premier Soccer League has ordered the final 14 minutes of their abandoned matchday 14 fixture against Dynamos—which was halted at 1-1—to be completed at Baobab Stadium this Thursday.
Hardrock are currently appealing that decision. Meanwhile, Caps United’s dropped points see them slide to fifth on the standings with 35 points, left to wonder what might have been on an afternoon that gave everything to the neutral, but left the mathematics of the title race finely poised.
