He ran for Zimbabwe at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, reached a world ranking of fourth at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, and has spent the decades since dedicating his life to sport administration and governance. Now, Abel Chimukoko will lead Team Zimbabwe to Los Angeles in 2028.
The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee has appointed Chimukoko as chef de mission for Team Zimbabwe at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, bringing over three decades of elite athletic competition, international sports governance and strategic event management experience to one of the most important leadership roles in Zimbabwean sport.
Chimukoko currently serves as director of sports for the Zimbabwe Republic Police, a position he has held since 2013, and brings previous chef de mission experience from leading sport delegations to the SARPCCO Games in Mbabane in 2015, Luanda in 2019 and Dar es Salaam in 2022, a track record that gives the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee confidence in his ability to manage the complex logistical and operational demands of an Olympic Games.
His credentials within the Olympic movement run deep. He is president of the Zimbabwe Olympians Association, served as athletes' commission chairman on the ZOC board in 2017 and, following his re-election in 2025, currently chairs the Olympians, Olympism365, Olympic Values Education Programme and Sustainability Commission. He has also represented Zimbabwe at the IOC Sports Integrity Symposium and World Anti-Doping Agency forums in Switzerland, underscoring his commitment to clean and ethical sport.
As chef de mission, Chimukoko will oversee the logistical, operational and administrative preparations for Team Zimbabwe, ensuring that the nation's athletes are fully supported as they pursue excellence on the world's grandest sporting stage in Los Angeles.
