SCOTTLAND FC are closing in on a successful Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title defence, powered by a mean defence and a clinical six-match winning streak.

The log leaders have amassed 40 points from 19 matches, recording 11 wins, seven draws and just one defeat to open a five-point gap over second-placed Hardrock.

Herentals and Caps United trail further behind on 33 points apiece.

The cornerstone of Scottland's campaign has been an impenetrable backline.

The champions have conceded a mere six goals in 19 matches, giving them the finest defensive record in the top flight by a considerable margin.

Their defensive metrics highlight total domestic dominance, underpinned by 15 clean sheets registered in 19 league fixtures and a current run of seven consecutive matches without conceding a goal.

Furthermore, they remain completely unbeaten on the road, claiming seven victories and three draws from their 10 away assignments.

This defensive masterclass carries the distinct signature of coach Norman Mapeza. Known for constructing tight rearguards, Mapeza guided FC Platinum to league titles in 2018 and the 2021-2022 seasons while conceding just 14 goals in each campaign.

At his current trajectory, his Scottland side is well on course to shatter those modern PSL defensive benchmarks.

Scottland tightened their stranglehold on the title race on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Ngezi Platinum Stars at Rufaro Stadium, courtesy of second-half strikes from Moses Shidolo and Khama Billiat.

Despite the impressive run, Mapeza remained grounded, crediting hard work, patience and perseverance for the team's success.

"We have been working hard. Nothing special. We have been working hard and, in football, perseverance sometimes pays. We've been patient and the guys have been patient as well. Now we are getting the results, but we have to keep working. It's still a long season and we have to keep working," he said in a post-match interview.

Reflecting on his side's defensive resilience and ability to see out matches, Mapeza said the players were reaping the rewards of their efforts on the training ground.

"Like I said, when we scored that first goal in the first few minutes of the second half, we had something to defend. That's when you can see exactly whether what we have been doing in training is working. If you can defend like that for 43 minutes or so, it shows the hard work we've been putting in during training is paying off,” he said.

"But Ngezi had some opportunities and could have scored. I'm happy for the boys because they worked so hard. Now we shift our focus to our game against Manica on Friday," he said.

Despite opening up a healthy advantage at the top of the table, Mapeza insisted his side remains focused solely on the next match rather than the title race.

"We are not looking much into that. What is important for us is to take each game as it comes. If we start counting points and looking at what other teams are doing, we will lose focus. We just need to take each game as it comes, try to get positive results like we did today and see how the season progresses."

Scottland will be looking to extend their winning streak to seven matches when they host Manica Diamonds at Rufaro Stadium on Friday.
