HARARE Mayor Jacob Mafume has commended Zimbabwe senior men's and women's volleyball teams after they claimed gold and silver medals respectively at the CAVB Senior Nations Championship Zone VI LA28 Olympic Qualifiers, hosted in the capital over the weekend.
The Zimbabwe senior men's team beat Zambia to win gold, while the women's team lost to Zambia in the final to settle for silver.
In a speech read on his behalf by Ward 41 Marlborough councilor Kudzai Kadzombe, the council's Information and Publicity Committee chairperson, the Mayor welcomed the visiting teams from Malawi, Namibia and Zambia, describing the tournament as a reflection of the bonds of friendship, unity and cooperation within the region.
"We are honoured to host our brothers and sisters from Malawi, Namibia, and Zambia, and we trust that your stay in Harare has been both comfortable and memorable," the Mayor said.
"Harare is proud to be a city that supports sport as a powerful tool for youth development, community engagement, and international connection," he said.
Mafume added that tournaments of this kind showcased athletic talent while also promoting cultural exchange and regional integration.

He also praised the organisers for putting Harare in a positive spotlight.
"We commend the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association and all partners for bringing this important tournament to our city, contributing to its vibrancy and positioning Harare as a destination for international sporting events," he said.
In his closing remarks, the Mayor thanked the athletes for their performances.
"To the athletes, thank you for inspiring us with your skill, determination, and sportsmanship. You have made our city proud. As you conclude this championship today, we wish you safe travels and continued success in your future competitions. We look forward to welcoming you back to Harare again," he said.
The men's team now turn their focus to the final round of African Qualifiers scheduled for Kinshasa, DRC in September.
