THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has appointed Allen Takudzwa Mavunga as its new director general (DG) with effect from June 1, 2026, replacing Elta Nengomasha.
The appointment was announced by SRC board chairman Nathaniel Madzivanyika, who said the decision was made with the approval of the Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe.
In a statement, the SRC said Mavunga brings vast experience from the corporate and sports administration sectors.
“Mr Mavunga has held senior positions in the corporate sector with his experience spanning from multinational sports administration, lotteries and gaming, national disaster relief to sports infrastructural development,” Madzivanyika said.
The SRC said Mavunga holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Liberty University in the United States and a Diploma in Olympic Sports Management from the International Olympic Committee.
A former athlete who represented Zimbabwe at regional competitions, Mavunga has also served in directorship roles in basketball and baseball in the United States.

The SRC board said his appointment is expected to strengthen efforts aimed at commercialising and ensuring sustainability within Zimbabwe’s sports sector.
“His qualifications and experience are aligned with the intended strategic focus of the SRC in ensuring the full commercialisation and sustainability of the sports sector in Zimbabwe,” the statement read.
Madzivanyika said the board was confident Mavunga would help transform the SRC into a key driver of the country’s sports economy in line with National Development Strategy 2 and Vision 2030.
“The Board of Commissioners congratulates Mr Mavunga on his appointment and wishes him success as he works to transform the SRC into the strategic engine of Zimbabwe’s sports economy,” he said.
Nengomasha stepped down in September last year and Peter Mudzimiri has been the acting DG since then.
