The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) has taken a major step toward modernising the sport across the country, officially launching a new national ranking framework.
In a ceremony held in Harare, the ZCF signed a landmark Licensing and Collaboration Agreement with the Elite Chess Club to roll out the Elite National Chess Rating (ENCR) System.
The agreement was formally signed by ZCF President Todd Mapingire and Elite Chess Club President Tapiwa Konga.
The ENCR System is designed to reshape how the game is administered and played in Zimbabwe.
By introducing a structured, transparent, and data-driven local rating framework, the initiative aims to upgrade tournament administration, improve rating accessibility for players of all levels, and create clearer development pathways for schools, academies, and clubs.
The system aligns with broader national goals in Zimbabwe, focusing on digital transformation, youth empowerment, and building modern sporting institutions.
Since taking office, ZCF President Todd Mapingire has prioritised strategic partnerships and grassroots development. He highlighted the agreement as a vital milestone for the sport's infrastructure.
"This agreement represents progress for Zimbabwean chess," Mapingire said. "The ENCR System aligns with our vision of building stronger and more sustainable chess structures for present and future generations."
Lawrence Tavagwisa, Secretary of Elite Chess Club and one of the system’s core developers, praised the federation's forward-thinking approach.
"This partnership is not only a major milestone for the ENCR project, but also an important step toward building a more organized, data-driven, and development-focused chess environment in Zimbabwe," Tavagwisa noted.
The collaboration establishes a solid framework for both organisations to manage and promote the new rating system, paving the way for increased professionalisation in local chess.
