AS the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League edges toward its mid-season mark, a familiar rivalry is set to reignite when MWOS lock horns with Scottland in a clash dripping with history and intensity.

It is happening today at the Ngoni Stadium, Norton.

The fixture carries more than just three points, rekindling memories of fierce encounters from their days in the Northern Region Soccer League, now known as the MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League, where the two sides built a rivalry that continues to simmer at the top level.

With Scottland sitting in fifth place on 14 points and MWOS just behind in sixth on 13, the stakes could not be higher, as a win for either side would create crucial separation on the table, while a draw would do little to shift the balance between the two.

MWOS head coach Lloyd Mutasa is relishing the occasion, describing the tie as one of the standout fixtures on the calendar and a moment both players and coaches cherish.

“I am feeling great. This is a big game, one of the biggest in the league,” he said.

“Remember, the rivalry between MWOS and Scottland goes way back to the NRSL days.

“I’m thankful for the privilege to be part of a match this big; these are the games players and coaches always want to be involved in, and we are looking forward to it.”

The build-up to the encounter has been intensified by the recent head-to-head record between the sides, with each team claiming a narrow 1-0 victory on home soil, underlining how evenly matched and fiercely contested their meetings have become.

However, MWOS head into the tie with notable selection headaches after Mutasa confirmed five absentees due to injuries and suspension.

David Ndeunyema, Arthur Banda, Mathew Sergio Murambiwa and Brandon Mpofu are sidelined through injury, while Jeremiah Makangira will miss out due to suspension.

Despite the setbacks, Mutasa struck a confident tone, insisting his squad has enough depth to rise to the occasion.

“We are choosing our team from a 25-man squad instead of the registered 30.

“I am confident in the available players, we have suitable replacements to represent the badge.

“These scenarios happen in football, and we aren’t focusing on it too much.

“We still have a big squad and we are good to go.”

Beyond tactics and team selection, Mutasa emphasised the crucial role supporters will play, calling on the club’s faithful to act as the driving force behind the team.

“The 12th player is always important every time we get onto the field,” he said.

“We need them before the match, during the match, and after the match.

“I have always said together we are strong, and we need their support tomorrow.

“Famba MWOS Famba!”

Among the supporters, however, there is a cautious tone regarding the team’s current balance compared to last season, with Norton-based fan Cynthia Chikwama highlighting concerns in key departments.

“The squad doesn’t look as strong as last season, especially going forward where the striking options are limited, and the central defence is not as solid,” she said.

She also pointed to the departure of influential figures as a major factor behind the team’s struggles to maintain control and cohesion.

“Abubakar Moffat, who is now at Scottland, and Nigel Matinha, at Hardrock, were key in controlling the midfield, and Matinha could even push forward when needed.

“Without them, the team is lacking that balance and authority.”

With pride, history and crucial mid-season momentum on the line, the stage is set for a gripping encounter where the margin for error is slim.

A victory could significantly reshape the standings, while anything less may leave both sides locked in place in what is already proving to be a tightly contested campaign.
