THE fifth edition of the Zambezi 7s Challenge Tournament is set to ignite the Harare Sports Club this weekend, with the significant inclusion of African rugby powerhouse, Kenya, headlining a field promising intense regional rivalry.

Sponsored by Delta Beverages through its Zambezi Lager brand, the tournament, which runs from November 8 to 9, has cemented its status as a premier rugby event on the continent.

The participation of the Kenyan national team adds considerable international pedigree, joining hosts the Zambezi Cheetahs (Zimbabwe) and the Zambian national teams in the main competition.

The addition of Kenya is a major coup for the tournament, which has been growing steadily since its debut in 2021.

Delta Beverages has noted this exciting expansion.

“Zambezi Lager is proud to announce the fifth edition of the Zambezi 7s Challenge Tournament, set to take place on November 8 to 9, 2025, at Harare Sports Club.

“Since its inception in 2021, the tournament has grown into a premier rugby event, attracting top talent from across Africa and beyond.

“This year, we’re excited to welcome Kenya to the line-up, joining previous participants from Germany, Zambia and Botswana.”

The competition for the prestigious title will be fierce, with the host nation’s Zambezi Cheetahs looking to defend their consecutive victories from 2023 and 2024.

Germany lifted the trophy in 2022, and the Botswana Spartans were the inaugural winners in 2021.

The event will also feature robust local engagement with clubs like Mutare Sports Club, Old Miltonians (Bulawayo), Old Georgians Sports Club, Old Hararians Sports Club, Pitbulls, and Zimbabwe Republic Police battling for supremacy.

In a major focus on inclusivity and development, the fifth edition features a Women’s Tournament with five international teams: two from Zambia, two from Zimbabwe, and one from Botswana.

A total prize pool of US$14 500 is up for grabs, split equally between the men’s and women’s competitions.

The winners will get US$5 000 for the Men’s Cup and the same amount for the Women’s Cup Winners.

Delta Beverages emphasised the importance of growing the local game: “We are thrilled to see the Zambezi Challenge Tournament grow and embrace inclusivity by welcoming more local clubs.

“This initiative not only elevates the competitive spirit but also strengthens community engagement and the development of sports in our region.”

All roads lead to Harare Sports Club this weekend for what promises to be an unforgettable showcase of rugby excellence.
