The Zimbabwe Triathlon Association (ZTA) will host a testimonial for two-time Olympic triathlete Chris Felgate during this year’s edition of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Troutbeck Africa Cup in Nyanga.

The Zimbabwe leg of the continental race, which is part of a series that includes Kenya, South Africa and Mauritius has been slated for November 17.

ZTA president Rick Fulton told NewsDay Sport that this year’s event will be special as it will be used to honour Felgate, who represented the country at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and this year in London.

The 30-year-old Felgate will call time on his triathlon career after the Africa Cup race.

“This year’s event will take place on November 17 and the preparations are well underway. The date has been set since December last year according to ITU calendar requirements, so we are already bidding for 2013 slots. We will also honour Chris Felgate at this year’s event and treat it as his testimonial on his retirement from international competitions,” said Fulton.

Felgate represented the country in the men’s race at the just-ended Olympic Games in London where he finished 52nd. Besides Felgate’s testimonial, the Troutbeck Africa Cup is set to host an array of international triathletes.

Felgate said they have also introduced a new schedule which will see young local triathletes from the 13-15 years age group and 15-18 years age group competing against their South African counterparts as the country braces for the 2016 Olympics.

“A Trans Limpopo Challenge between Triathlon South Africa Junior Triathletes in the 13-15 and 15-18 age groups. These athletes are all from their Junior Academy and 14 are travelling here to compete against our juniors,” said Fulton.
