THE Bulawayo City Council has invited Castle Lager Premiership clubs Highlanders and Chicken Inn to take part in a Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund match at Barbourfields Stadium on December 9.

The match, though, could be played a week earlier, according to Chicken Inn’s request after they accepted the invitation.

Highlanders have not yet responded and no comment could be obtained from the club yesterday.

Chicken Inn secretary-general Tavengwa Hara yesterday confirmed the invitation and said they had agreed to participate in the match subject to approval by the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Chicken Inn’s response to the city council reads: “We refer to your letter dated 29th October 2012. We thank you for recognising our team to participate in this noble cause. We are happy to confirm our availability to participate in this match against Highlanders, subject to its clearance by the PSL. We, however, would have preferred the match to be played on December 1 or 2 to allow our team to break early for the festive season. Once again we thank you for the good gesture,” Hara said.

The 2012 Mayor’s Cheer Fund was launched early this month by Bulawayo mayor, Thaba Moyo and aims to raise $150 000 to cheer up under-privileged members of society during the forthcoming festive season.

Last year, the city surpassed its target of $100 000 with OK Zimbabwe contributing the lion’s share. The match between the two big clubs could contribute significantly towards the fund after good crowds were recorded in back-to-back league matches played at Emagumeni.
