The second seeds were beaten by a wildcard combination, New Zealand-born Australian Sacha Jones and Aucklander Abigail Guthrie, 3-6 6-4 13-11.

Erakovic and Black, who made three WTA doubles finals in 2013, saved three match points in the super tie-break but not a fourth.

Black was defending the title she won with Australian Anastasia Rodionova at last summer’s Classic.

Erakovic, the world No 46, begins her singles campaign today against another unseeded player in American Lauren Davis, who is ranked 70.
