THE Zimbabwe Golf Association has named a four-member amateur golf team to represent the country at the inaugural Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) President’s Cup to be held in Zambia later this month.

The tournament, which is the brainchild of current AGC boss Ambassador Joe Malanji, will be held at Nkana Golf Club in Kitwe from September 27 to October 3.
Zimbabwe’s team which will be led by the inform Tonderai Masunga comprises Thembelani Vundla, Visitor Mapwanya and Robson Chinhoyi while Stephen Simukai is the non-travelling reserve.
Eleven countries have signed up for the prestigious tournament with the continental golf governing body, where respected local golf administrator Obed Dube is the vice-president recently unveiling an ambitious budget of $400 000 for the competition.
AGC secretary-general, Hugh Mortimer told the Times of Zambia that 11 countries namely Namibia, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Tunisia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and hosts, Zambia had so far entered for the week-long event.

The AGC President’s Cup is also open to nations outside Africa.
Zimbabwe’s participation at the continental competition comes as a consolation to local amateur golf after ZGA’s failure to enter the team for this week’s World Amateur Team Championship to be held in Japan.
Local amateurs had participated in every edition of the prestigious biennial tournament, which is also known as the Eisenhower Trophy, since in 1958, but will miss out this year after the ZGA leadership failed to meet the registration deadline.
