Two Zanu PF Bulawayo provincial youth members were remanded in custody early this week for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting a fellow party member, leaving him for dead.

The pair, Obert Musindo (31) and Godwin Mugumba (34) of Tshabalala and Magwegwe North respectively, allegedly kidnapped Nqobile Mlilo from the birthday party of Zanu PF politburo member Tshinga Dube in Killarney suburb.

Mlilo is an aspiring candidate for the provincial National Youth Service chairmanship.

Musindo is Zanu PF’s district chairman for Sizinda while Mugumba is the party’s Bulawayo provincial youth secretary for health.

The two were not formally charged with kidnapping when they briefly appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Abednico Ndebele on Wednesday.

They were remanded in custody to September 7 and advised to apply to the High Court for bail. Admire Chikwayi, for the State, told the court that on August 7, Musindo, Mugumba and Mlilo were part of the crowd that attended Dube’s birthday party.

It is alleged the two accused Mlilo of not being a suitable candidate for the chairmanship of the Bulawayo provincial chapter of the National Youth Service.

They allegedly dragged Mlilo and forced him into a vehicle at around 11pm and drove to an unknown destination where they assaulted him with fists and booted feet all over.

It is alleged Mlilo fell unconscious and the pair left him for dead.

Mlilo only regained consciousness the following day and discovered he was lying in a trench near Ascot shopping centre.

A police report was made, leading to Musindo and Mugumba’s arrest.
