MASVINGO — An MDC-T activist based in Mashava landed himself in trouble with police after he was allegedly spotted pasting campaign posters less than 100 metres from a referendum polling station over the weekend.
REPORT BY TATENDA CHITAGU
Christopher Hwedza is alleged to have been seen pasting a vote “Yes” campaign poster near a polling booth at Balmain Spar shop near Bere Primary School in Mashava.
He was immediately arrested and charged for contravening the Electoral Act which forbids carrying of campaign material within a 100m radius of a polling station.
Hwedza, however, denied the charge when he appeared before Chivi resident magistrate Francis Mapfumo on Monday, saying he had pasted the poster 2km away from the polling station.
His lawyer Martin Mureri told the court that his client was being victimised because of his political affiliation.
