ORGANISERS of the unique and highly-publicised Mr Ugly Zimbabwe pageant David “Apama” Machowa tomorrow launch the inaugural Mr Ugly Africa and Mr Ugly World at a Harare restaurant.

Mr Ugly Africa pageant is pencilled for Johannesburg, South Africa between November and December this year while Mr Ugly World will be in Zimbabwe next year.

Speaking to NewsDay on the sidelines of a media briefing yesterday, Apama said the journey to the continental competitions will start soon as potential partners have guaranteed their commitment to support the pageant.

“When I spoke of organising Mr Ugly Africa and World pageant people did not take me serious, but as a man of his words, on Thursday (tomorrow) together with our sponsors will be showing how committed we are by launching the two pageants in Harare,” Apama said.

“We have secured a number of sponsors among them Devine Assignments. A leading furniture company, Lifestyle Furniture, Centre is also coming on board and some others whom we cannot publicise for professional reasons to help us organise a world class pageant.”

Apama said they will be going around the country’s 10 provinces for scouting and is optimistic that the provincial pageant competition will provide stiff competition ahead of the main pageant to be held in August.

He said for the Mr Ugly Africa, each African country will provide two of its ugliest contestants, while recently crowned Mr Ugly Zimbabwe Miso Sere and two-time winner William Masvinu will represent Zimbabwe at the finals in South Africa.

Mr Ugly which started in Beitbridge in 2009 as a social event has gained popularity and received overwhelming endorsements that has seen a number of arts promoters and event organisers across borders coming on board.

The last edition of the pageant was held last year and drew international attention with both local and foreign media covering the humorous event.
