SEED CO has promised farmers there is adequate seed for the 2016/17 farming season, with supplies already despatched to stockists nationwide, amid optimism for a better agricultural season.

Speaking at a media luncheon, Seed Co managing director, Denias Zaranyika said it was a blessing that rains had come early compared to last year, when they started after mid-December, providing an opportunity for farmers to plant and increase productivity.

“We have fully stocked all outlets. If farmers go, they will be able to access seed from all the outlets, we stocked from as early as July. There is not going to be a shortage of seed in Zimbabwe, we have enough seed for the season and might have a bit of carryover to next season,” he said.

Zaranyika said the company had made a deliberate move to either maintain or reduce prices of seed in an effort to ensure farmers can afford.

Seed shortages and high prices have been a major concern in the past, with some farmers failing to plant owing to the scarcity of farming inputs.

Seed Co has also despatched agronomists to all farming areas to assist farmers in making the right choice when selecting seed.

Zaranyika said the company strongly believed that the coming agricultural season would improve the country’s fortunes.

“As Seed Co, we are bullish that this year is going to be a successful year. We are of the strong conviction that Zimbabwe is now on a genuine path to regain its strong breadbasket position,” he said.
