TWO clinics run by the Gweru City Council are still operating without incinerators, two years after the local authority’s health department ordered that the furnaces be installed at the two institutions.

An incinerator is a furnace used for burning waste and, Gweru’s Mtapa Clinic and Isolation Hospital have always dumped their waste, including used syringes, bandages and linen in open spaces, posing a health hazard to residents.

In 2014, the health department recommended that council should include the issue of incinerators in the 2015 budget.
