ZANU PF’s Mashonaland West provincial executive has written to the party’s politburo requesting national hero status for the late former governor, Peter Chanetsa (pictured), who died in Harare on Monday.

Provincial chairperson Ephraim Chengeta said the recommendation was in recognition of Chanetsa’s immense contribution to the country before and after independence.
“The province unanimously agreed that Chanetsa be accorded national hero status mainly because of his contribution during the liberation struggle and his continued sacrifice to the nation after independence when he was appointed to various positions from chief of protocol, governor, Member of Parliament to central committee member” Chengeta said.
But, Zanu PF national commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere yesterday said the politburo had not yet received the recommendation letter.
“We are waiting for the province to forward their recommendations,” he said.

“We lost a great man in Peter Chanetsa, a strong personality and highly dependable. He was a committed nationalist who served our nation very well.”
The former Hurungwe North MP died on Monday aged 70.
He is survived by his wife Beatrice and three children.
Mourners are gathered at No. 6 Iona Close, Borrowdale, Harare, while others are at his Biri Farm in Zvimba.
