A TOP police officer, Superintendent Nyambo Viera, yesterday confirmed there was a rift between police officers and members of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) over the way they conducted investigations into extortion allegations.

Viera made the admission as informer, Dalish Nguwaya sought referral of his case to the Constitutional Court, arguing that the State was not supposed to prosecute him since he had turned into a State witness after being promised immunity.
In his testimony, Viera accused CIO deputy director, Kizito Gweshe, of protecting Nguwaya from prosecution despite the police having evidence against him.
Viera told the court that Gweshe informed them that there were top CIO bosses, who were implicated in terrorising Chinese nationals by extorting them and as such needed to be investigated.
“Your worship, we were told that (CIO boss, a) Tachiveyi had muscled his way into the directorship of a company called Classic Foods, but after investigations, we found the information to be untrue. We did an investigation against Chief Superintendent Nyaradzai Majachani, Superintendent Sheperd Tachiona and Mangwanya, but we also found the information to be untrue,” he said.

But magistrate, Themba Kuwanda cautioned and reminded Viera to stick to issues pertaining to the immunity allegedly promised to Nguwaya in exchange for the information.
Viera told court that the issue of immunity had been smuggled in by Gweshe in order to protect Nguwaya.
The matter was postponed to June 21.
