COUNTRIES in Southern African Development Community (Sadc) have endorsed the candidature of Zimbabwean telecommunications expert, Cosmas Zavazava, who is vying for the post of director for the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) at the Geneva-based International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

South Africa’s permanent representative to Geneva, Joyce Nozipho Mxakato-Diseko, told guests during celebrations to mark Zimbabwe’s 38th Independence Day anniversary that the Sadc bloc was behind Zavazava’s candidature.
“Based on his work experience, we are convinced that he is the best candidate for this post, which primarily takes care of developing countries, and in particular the least developed countries (ldcs), landlocked developing countries and small island developing states,” Mxakato-Diseko said.
Zavazava has over 30 years of experience in the telecommunications sector and has been an active and visible agent of the ITU’s development efforts for years, working across the world mobilising partnerships and resources.
“There is also a humanitarian side of him. For example, he has been involved in providing support to countries affected by natural disasters across the world. In West Africa he designed a project and was on the ground to deploy ITU resources and capabilities through ITU’s first big data project, to mitigate the impact of Ebola,” Mxakato-Diseko said.

Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Geneva, Taonga Mushayavanhu said the selection of Zavazava to compete for the post of director Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT) was demonstration that the country has people with expertise to drive the Information, Communication and Technology agenda through vast knowledge and human capital. “To further enhance the work of the ITU, Zimbabwe has proposed one of its illustrious sons, Cosmas Zavazava, for the elected post of Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT),” Mushayavanhu said.
