A HARARE man, who was arrested sometime last year for sexually abusing a corpse at a funeral in Epworth, awaits ruling today after the completion of his trial.

The suspect, Big Sipiliano of Jacha in Epworth, is facing charges of violating the corpse as well as indecent assault.

Two witnesses testified in court that Sipiliano committed the offence.

Allegations were that on January 2, the witness was attending a funeral with other neighbours in a room where the body lay in state.

Sipiliano allegedly got inside the room and said: “I have always loved this woman. I had always wanted to have sex with her before she died, but her death doesn’t mean my wish will not be fulfilled.”

The accused then allegedly went on to uncover the body and exclaimed that she was still looking beautiful.

The court heard that one of the people at the funeral wake tried to stop Sipiliano from performing the acts to no avail as he threatened to assault her.

After the act, Sipiliano went to the witness and grabbed her from behind.

A report was then made to the police, leading to Sipiliano’s arrest.

In his defence, Sipiliano told the court that he never committed the alleged offence. He further told the court that he did not sexually molest the corpse, but only touched it.

The State was represented by Shambidzani Fungura and Vincent Chidembo.
