A Presidential escort police outrider was on Monday involved in an accident along Borrowdale Road in Harare. National Traffic police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome confirmed the accident.

“The accident occurred on Monday at 14:30hours at (the intersection of) Borrowdale and Whitewell roads. It involved a police BMW bike which was part of the escort for his Excellency President Robert Mugabe and a Toyota Hilux twin cab,” said Chigome.

“The bike was travelling along Borrowdale due south and was behind two other riders who had cleared the intersection. The second party (Toyota Hilux driver) approached the intersection due east where he collided with the motorbike. As a result of the impact, both parties were injured and taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital.”

Chigome urged drivers to be cautious when approaching intersections to avoid accidents. “Our encouragement to the public is to give respect to the President’s escort.

Whenever one is approaching an intersection, they should slow down and see if the road is clear for them to proceed. And people should give precedence to the Presidential motorcade,” he said.

Several Presidential escort police outriders have previously been seriously injured in accidents on the country’s roads.
