A new pensioners representative body, the Pensioners Union Trust of Zimbabwe (PUTZ), has been formed to champion the interests of pensioners and improve their living standards.

Wisdom Zhanje, the PUTZ interim president, said they formed the organisation after realising the continued marginalisation and under-representation of pensioners.

We have decided to form this group to complement government efforts to improve the living standards of pensioners in the country, he said.

We realised as pensioners that our concerns do not normally get the attention they deserve at all levels of public administration.

Among the major objectives of the body is the desire to avail land for residential stands and secure funds for projects or co-operatives to supplement their monthly pensions. They intend to engage building societies and other housing schemes to enable them get accommodation.

Weve signed a memorandum of understanding with a partner, Vantage Savings Solutions, who will accord affordable housing credit facilities to our members to purchase residential stands or building material.

We also want to make members economically gainful as some of our members still have the desire, energy and time to engage in income-generating projects or run co-operatives, Zhanje added.
