Mthwakazi Liberation Front (MLF) has resolved to push for a united front of political parties in Matabeleland.
At a meeting chaired by the party’s Botswana-based president, known by his pseudonym General Nandi Nandi, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, the secessionist movement agreed to court Zapu and the Welshman Ncube-led MDC.
MLF vice-president Edgar Gumede said they wanted people of Matabeleland to determine their own political future.
“We resolved to try and engage Zapu and MDC to work towards a united pro-Mthwakazian political front,” he said. “We will do that by engaging them in talks. We have to unite as Mthwakazians if we are serious about solving our problems.”
Gumede said the movement also resolved to send “a powerful delegation” to Zimbabwe, the Southern African Development Community and the African Union before engaging international bodies like the European Union, Non-Aligned Movement and the United Nations.
“We sent a secession document to these bodies and we got no response,” he said. “The mission is therefore to make a follow-up.

“The idea is to create awareness in these bodies, as we engage the (President Robert Mugabe) regime.”
Zapu spokesperson Methuseli Moyo said his party had not been approached by MLF on the issue while MDC spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube said his party did not support secessionist politics.
