The Zanu PF youth wing yesterday threatened unspecified action against senior party officials accused of factionalism, fighting to succeed President Robert Mugabe.

“Don’t tempt us beyond our ability to restrain ourselves,” Zanu PF youth wing secretary Absolom Sikhosana told journalists in Harare. “We know of only one candidate for the Presidency of the party and government and that’s President Mugabe. We can’t rule it out (that there are people eyeing the presidency) but as youths we will not allow it,” said Sikhosana.

“For us that is taboo to discuss succession. We have got one candidate, that is President Mugabe. Sikhosana’s remarks came amid reports the party is divided along factional lines. The factions are allegedly led by Defence minister Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice-President Joice Mujuru.

The youths denounced party leaders accused of imposing candidates in the ongoing restructuring of the district coordinating committees.

“On the home ground, we are hearing a lot that is happening especially in the restructuring of the party. We are told there are fights in district coordinating committee and imposition of candidates. We want to reiterate that we will stand guided by the President who has said that people should be allowed to choose their own leadership and nobody should interfere with that process,” Sikhosana said.
