Bulawayo residents are irked by the shambolic operations of the local authority’s refuse collection department that leaves rubbish bins uncollected forcing people to dump waste in undesignated areas.

Bulawayo councillors this week said, contrary to the Health, Housing and Education Committee’s claims that the weekly routines of collecting refuse in the eastern suburbs and in the western suburbs fortnightly were running smoothly, residents were still dumping garbage in undesignated areas because their bins were not collected.

According to a council report, “the weekly collection in the high density areas was planned for once staff to man four additional refuse compactors was secured”.

Ward 10 councillor Prince Dube said the refuse collectors are demoralised unlike in the past when “they would alert residents by shouting making noise and whistling and people would be alert to put bins out on time”.

Dube’s Ward 15 counterpart Israel Mabaleka said refuse collectors have to be properly remunerated and in time for them to be motivated.

Ward 27 councilor Siboniso Khumalo said refuse is still being dumped anywhere, “since the refuse collectors collect only soft refuse and refuse to collect cans and bottles”.
