GWERU — Leading shoe-manufacturing company, Bata Shoes, has reportedly suspended 29 of its employees after they downed tools last month in protest against non-provision of safety clothing.

Zimbabwe Footwear Tanning and Allied Workers’ Union spokesperson Martin Tazvivinga yesterday told NewsDay the workers were suspended without benefits with the company accusing them of engaging in an illegal job action.

“The workers were suspended last month on allegations of participating in an illegal job action.

“Right now they are still on suspension and management is quiet on the matter and the workers have since taken up the matter to the Labour ministry to have it addressed,” Tazvivinga said.

Bata management could not be reached for comment at the time of going to print yesterday.
