Two disc jockeys (DJs) at a bar in Gwanda have landed themselves in trouble after allegedly displaying a bearer’s cheque with President Robert Mugabe’s picture inscribed “Z$10 000, Reserve Bank of Zanu” at the top.
The alleged incident happened more than a year ago, but the State had been waiting for approval from the Attorney General’s Office to prosecute, which was only granted on Monday.
The two, Zwelibanzi Moyo (23) and Posani Nkomazana (29), who are out of custody, pleaded not guilty to undermining the authority of the President, or insulting him when they appeared before Gwanda magistrate Jimmy Ntonga yesterday and were remanded to Monday for judgment.
It was the State case that on June 9 last year at around midnight, Moyo was atMillee Restaurant Bar, where he was entertaining patrons by playing the late System Tazvida’s music from the computer.
The screen of the computer was allegedly showing a bearer’s cheque inscribed “Z$10 000 Reserve Bank of Zanu” at the top with the picture of Mugabe at the centre.
Some patrons allegedly saw the bearer’s cheque and started laughing which attracted the attention of a police officer around who became inquisitive. This led to Moyo’s arrest, who then implicated his colleague Nkomazana alleging he was the artist behind the material, leading to his arrest. The “offensive” material was printed out and presented in court as an exhibit.
