A disc jockey employed by a bar in Gwanda, who displayed a bearer’s cheque with President Robert Mugabe’s picture inscribed “Z$10 000, Reserve Bank of Zanu PF”, was yesterday fined for undermining the authority of the nationalist.
Zwelibanzi Moyo (23) was convicted by Gwanda magistrate Jimmy Ntonga despite pleading not guilty to the charge.
He was fined $100 or 35 months in jail, with three months suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Moyo’s co-accused, who is also a disc jockey, Posani Nkomazana (29), was acquitted by Ntonga due to lack of evidence.
The court heard that on June 9 last year at 12 midnight, Moyo was at Millee Restaurant Bar where he was entertaining patrons by playing the late System Tazvita’s music from a computer.
The computer screen showed a bearer’s cheque inscribed “Z$10 000 Reserve Bank of Zanu PF” at the top with Mugabe’s picture at the centre. Some patrons saw the bearer’s cheque and started laughing attracting the attention of a police officer.

This led to Moyo’s arrest.
He implicated Nkomazana, alleging he had created the offensive material.
