THE country’s premier mining institution, Zimbabwe School of Mines (ZSM) has initiated partnership talks with Britain’s Camborne School of Mines.

It is also pursuing plans to resuscitate dormant linkages with an Algeria-based school of mines.
ZSM chief executive officer Dzingirai Tusai told a graduation ceremony in Bulawayo last Friday that partnership talks were at an advanced stage.
“The school continues to pursue the drive of spreading its wings regionally and internationally,” Tusai said.
“Locally the school has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lupane State University and carved relationships with Zimbabwe Miners’ Federation, Women Miners’ Association, Meteorological Department, Youth in Mining, University of Zimbabwe and National University of Science and Technology.”

Tusai said ZSM intended to “resuscitate the dormant partnership with Al-abed School of Mines in Algeria and also look at the possibility of training initiative with Equatorial Guinea. These two initiatives have been incorporated into our 2013 plans”.
On long–term vision for the school, which attracts students from regional countries, Tusai said by 2018, a masters in Mining Technology would be offered, specialised postgraduate course in Mine Management (2014) and postgraduate course in coalbed methane would be offered by end of next year.
Meanwhile, the mining school is collecting material for a mining historical garden and is appealing to the mining industry players to donate old mining equipment.
