BULAWAYO City Council is owed over $500 000 in unpaid tuition fees by parents and government under the Basic Education Assistance Module (Beam) programme.

According to the latest council minutes, $502 779 was owing for the current term and previous terms.
“A total of $591 980 was paid for council and tuition fees by the end of the term.
“A total of $502 779 was owing for this and previous terms,” the minutes read.
“The government paid $40 933 towards Beam beneficiaries mostly for previous terms, while $36 960 was still owing for this term.”

The minutes also stated that unpaid parents-teachers association (PTA) levies by the end of last term amounted to $380 505.
“The PTAs also received $38 750 from Beam funds and $31 098 was still outstanding from the government.
“Funds collected from the parents play a very important part in the development of schools and as such parents were commended for their continued support for the education of their children,” council said.
