THE government has gazetted new traffic penalties for Gweru Municipality that will see traffic offenders paying penalties of between $10 and $50.

The local authority’s traffic fines were last reviewed in 1976.
The latest Government Gazette published last week read in part: “The schedule for Gweru Offences and Fixed Penalties Regulation, 1976, published in Zimbabwe Government Notice of 1976, is repealed and the following is substituted.”
Errant motorists will be punished for “dangerous parking, parking without displaying discs, picking and dropping off commuters at undesignated places”, among other traffic offences.
Parking for purposes of doing business will attract $50, while “parking motor vehicle on undefined parking place causing obstruction to traffic attracts a fine of $50 and parking vehicles used for purpose of carrying on business in any road between 6pm to 6am will attract a $30 fine.

“Parking motor vehicles for picking up or dropping passengers, according to the regulations, will attract a $50 fine, while the charges for several offences cited also attracts between $30 and $50,” the regulations read in part.
Other charges that include failure to display a parking disc in the appropriate place will cost $10 and continued parking after the disc expires will be punished with a $10 charge.
For commuter omnibuses, parking after the station is closed will cost $50. Cyclists were not spared by the regulations as those who fail to give way when leaving any cycle track will be fined $20.
Those who fail to obey notices or signs will have to pay $50.
“Driving any motor vehicle on a cycle track will attract a fee of $50, while cleaning motor vehicles at a parking lot will attract a $50 fine.”
