BULAWAYO-BASED Spot FM presenter Soneni Gwizi has been nominated for the Women4Africa awards slated for Kensington, London, in May. STAFF REPORTER Women4Africa is a United Kingdom-registered organisation focusing on empowering, supporting and celebrating women’s roles in their communities through conferences, education, prestigious awards and special honours on those identified and nominated by the public.
In a Press release on Monday, the organisation announced that the 2013 annual awards would be held on May 18.
“This year’s awards will be honouring a plethora of amazing African women,” read the statement in part.
Nominees are from 15 African countries that include Ethiopia, Malawi, Swaziland, Senegal, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana and Zimbabwe.
Gwizi, popularly known as Aka Thandeka, presents programmes on HIV and Aids, disability and the vulnerable groups on the ZBC-run station.
“Women4Africa will recognise some outstanding women for their evidenced contributions and achievements,” the statement added. “Some of the women to be recognised are Soneni Gwizi of Zimbabwe, the first female with disability who is a radio broadcaster in Zimbabwe.”

Gwizi yesterday said she was elated by the nomination, but could not comment further as she was travelling.
Some of the nominees are Joe Okei–Odumakin of Nigeria, recently hailed as “a fearless, fiery champion of democracy” and human rights campaigner Esther Madudu, Ugandan midwife.
