THE Finance ministry has unfrozen 1 000 nurses’ posts with effect from March 1, in a move that will see about half the country’s unemployed nurses getting jobs.

The development is set to bring relief to the health sector which is facing a serious staff shortage.
Acting Secretary for Health and Child Welfare Davis Dhlakama yesterday told the Parliamentary Thematic Committee on HIV and Aids, chaired by Lupane Senator Dalumuzi Khumalo, that they would start recruiting next month, following the green light.
“The Finance ministry has decided to unfreeze 1 000 posts for nurses starting from the first of next month and we are going to be recruiting nurses on the basis of the thousand posts created.
“However, the posts created are not enough and that is why we made bilateral arrangements with other countries so that we could send our nurses there to do their job rather than seeing them doing other jobs they have not trained for,” said Dhlakama.

The country-to-country arrangement means Zimbabwe gets a one-off payment for exported staff while the host country takes care of the nurses’ welfare.
“A lot has to be done as the posts created do not cater for all the nurses. A lot of work has to be done to accommodate other unemployed nurses,” Dhlakama said.
