THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has pledged to increase the carrying capacity of passenger trains from March 27 to April 1 to cater for the increased number of travellers during the Easter holidays.

Easter will coincide with the end of the first school term. In a statement yesterday, NRZ public relations manager Fanuel Masikati said the parastatal would put additional passenger trains in anticipation of the increased demand.
“Having realised that the closure of schools coincides with the onset of the Easter Holiday period when there is an upsurge of the travelling public and school children who usually get stranded at bus termini, the NRZ will boost the capacity of passenger train services,” reads the statement.
“In an effort to increase the carrying capacity of inter-city train services, the NRZ will suspend the running of commuter trains from Friday March 29 to April 1 2013 and normal operations will resume on April 2 2013.”
Masikati said the Bulawayo Francistown passenger train will be suspended from March 29 to April 4 and will resume on April 5.

“In addition to the normal passenger services, the NRZ will run special trains from Harare to Bulawayo on March 28 and Bulawayo to Harare on March 29,” he said.
“Travellers traversing on the Harare-Mutare route will have a special train on March 28, in addition to normal train service.” NRZ appealed to travellers to book and buy tickets on time to avoid inconveniences.
