JAZZ ARTIST, Dorothy Masuka has received a life time achievement award at the Klein Karoo National arts festival (KKNK) in Oudtshoorn. Masuka is known for classic hits such as Hamba Nontsokolo and Pata-Pata a song made famous by the late Miriam Makeba.

Celebrating 60 years in the music industry, the 77-year-old Masuka is performing at the festival as part of the African Voices Ensemble. She shares the stage with artists such as Laurika Rauch, Zolani Mahola from Freshlyground and Afrikaans rocker Karen Zoid.

Her co-performers said Masuka has left an indelible mark on the musical history of the country.

“We just really wanted to bring her to the KKNK because she’s an amazing person, but just like me the boers don’t really know who she is so it’s quite a weird thing to do because on the one hand we are honouring Dorothy at the same time we are introducing her,” said Zoid.

Masuka will celebrate her 78th birthday in September “This is one of my greatest hits its one song that is now they call it a classic,” said Masuka.
