PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe yesterday said there was need for government to come up with mechanisms to decongest cities.

Launching the National Housing Policy, Mugabe said the creation of self-contained settlements could decongest the cities.

“Government is considering self-contained human settlements at the periphery of major urban centres as a means to decongest cities,” he said.

Mugabe said local authorities should be innovative enough to engage private players so as to remove unnecessary bureaucratic bottlenecks.

The policy’s objective is to develop a co-ordinated housing sector which addresses the needs and interests of stakeholders.
