HARARE, Jul. 22 (NewsDay Live) –Outgoing Malawi ambassador Peter Namathanga has commended the cordial relations between the two countries.
Speaking at a farewell luncheon organised by Foreign Affairs and International Trade permanent secretary Albert Chimbindi, the outgoing envoy hailed Zimbabwe's timely humanitarian interventions on two occasions when Malawi experienced humanitarian crises during his stay in Harare.
He thanked Zimbabwe for its swift humanitarian response following devastating floods in Malawi, and for facilitating the safe passage of thousands of Malawian nationals fleeing anti-immigrant violence in South Africa earlier this year, describing both as powerful demonstrations of regional solidarity.
The repatriation operation saw Zimbabwe serve as a critical transit corridor for more than 38,000 Malawian returnees processed since last month.
Namathanga also welcomed the successful mid-term review of the 11th Session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC) held in Harare on 24 and 25 June 2026, saying it reaffirmed both countries' shared commitment to strengthening cooperation across trade, agriculture, education, transport and regional integration.
The review, which brought together senior officials from both foreign ministries, was convened to assess progress on jointly agreed programmes and to finalise outstanding memoranda of understanding.

Zimbabwe and Malawi are bound by shared history, culture and longstanding people-to-people connections, with the JPCC serving as the principal framework for structured bilateral engagement between the two nations.
