THE country’s internet and telecommunications sector recorded a 57.28 percent increase in internet and data traffic during the first quarter of 2026.

“This growth has been driven by accelerated LTE and 5G infrastructure deployment, increased smartphone adoption and the growing use of modern digital applications,” Information minister, Soda Zhemu, said during a post-Cabinet briefing.

“An additional 13 new 5G base stations were deployed during the quarter, bringing the total number to 379. Furthermore, 161 LTE, 85 3G and 68 2G base stations were established as part of ongoing efforts to modernise and expand the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.”

He added that fibre optic network expansion continues to strengthen national connectivity, with fibre coverage increasing from 4 046 kilometres to 8 500 kilometres, while the total fibre backbone expanded by 33.83 percent to surpass 19 000 kilometres.

Zhemu also highlighted the growing impact of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services, particularly Starlink, in bridging connectivity gaps in underserved and remote communities through the Presidential Internet Scheme.

“Strong growth in Low Earth Orbit subscriptions is significantly improving internet access in previously underserved areas and supporting the government’s vision of universal connectivity,” he said.
