ZANU PF Makoni district has welcomed party stalwart Didymus Mutasa in his hometown after his appointment into the Zanu PF Council of Elders by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, with party members saying they would tap from his political experience.
Mutasa’s appointment marked a return to party structures after years on the sidelines following his fallout with the late former President Robert Mugabe’s administration during the factional battles that preceded the toppling of the latter in 2017.
Before his political eclipse, Mutasa served as State Security minister and was also a secretary for administration — one of the ruling party’s influential posts.
Zanu PF Council of Elders is a consultative body made up of senior and long-serving party members tasked with providing strategic guidance and institutional memory to the ruling party’s leadership.
The Zanu PF Makoni district co-ordinating committee held a meeting in Rusape on Thursday, where Mutasa was embraced by the district.
Mutasa, who was at one time hailed as the Zanu PF Manicaland godfather, was welcomed by several of the party’s central committe members, including his longtime friend Shadreck Chipanga.

Some of the central committee members who attended the meeting are Lucia Chitura and Mathew Nyashanu.
Phillip Mukoko, a Zanu PF national youth member, also attended the meeting.
Addressing the gathering, Makoni DCC chairperson Kudzai Chipanga applauded Mnangagwa for his decision to appoint Mutasa into the Council of Elders.
“We want to thank President Emmerson Mnangagwa for walking the talk and leaving no one and place behind after appointing comrade Didymus Mutasa into the Council of Elders,” he said.
“We are going to tap in the political experience of comrade Mutasa in fulfilling the party’s desire to achieve the 2030 vision.
“As a district, we are very happy with the appointment and as Makoni district, we have been recognised.”
The Council of Elders is chaired by former Defence minister Sydney Sekeremayi.
