A 42-YEAR-OLD Mutoko man who axed an imbiber who had refrained him from assaulting his girlfriend has been sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted for attempted murder.
Tanaka Mupaso of Kugarahanya Village, under Chief Mutoko, will, however, serve an effective four-year jail term after Mutoko regional magistrate Chiedza Gatsi suspended a year on condition of good behaviour.
The complainant is Wellington Gonyeka, a 49-year-old who also resides in the same village.
According to court papers, on December 30, 2025,Gonyeka was drinking beer at Gwanza business centre inMutoko. Mupaso assaulted Gonyeka’s girlfriend Susan Mazarura, prompting the latter to intervene.
Out of anger, Mupasostruck Gonyeka with an iron bar on his right hand.

He then took an axe and struck Gonyeka on the head.
The complainant fell down and became unconscious.
He was rushed to Mutoko District Hospital, where he was admitted.
