THE prime suspect in the murder of broadcast journalist Cordelia Masalethulini (45) appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody to January 22.

Fungai Tawengwa (46), who was reportedly Masalethulini’s lover, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing a murder charge.

During the court session, Moyo informed Tawengwa that he was facing a serious offence and that only the High Court has jurisdiction to grant him bail.

The court heard that the accused and the deceased were lovers.

On January 4, 2026, the two spent the day drinking beer together at Helensvale shopping centre in Borrowdale, Harare.

That night, it rained, prompting them to seek shelter at number 716 Whisper Road, Borrowdale, until around 10pm.

Later that night, Tawengwa and the now deceased had a misunderstanding and she refused to go home with him.

However, after the rain stopped, the two walked towards the Harare-Domboshava Road.

On January 8, 2026, the deceased’s body was found in a pool of blood along the Borrowdale-Domboshava Road.

According to the prosecution, Masalethulini's death was suspicious.

Her half-naked body was discovered by a security guard along the road.
